These are marketed as supplements containing carefully selected combinations of vitamins and minerals your skin needs to remain healthy. The jury is still out in regard to whether the supplements actually work or not, but plenty of people are still taking them anyway.

The point of this article is not to sway you one way or the other as to the effectiveness of skincare vitamins. Rather, it is to inform you of some of the facts surrounding these products. The more you know about them, the better you will be able to make informed decisions.

Take a look at the ingredients in your typical skincare vitamin supplement and you’ll discover that virtually all the most important ones are things you can get from a healthy diet. This should tell you something. It should tell you that skincare vitamin supplements are not better for you than eating well. In fact, science has proven that our bodies absorb nutrients from food much more easily than from supplements. It is probably better for your skin to just adopt a healthy diet.

Science has also proven that our bodies do not absorb nutrients from food as easily in middle age and beyond. Like just about everything else, the digestive system doesn’t work as well in your 50s as it did in your 20s. This suggests that skincare vitamin supplements may help older people – even if they already have a healthy diet. Supplements may provide that extra boost of nutrients an older person’s body is not naturally absorbing from food sources.

To the extent that skincare vitamin supplements do work, they are at their best when combined with a good skincare routine. The effectiveness of a product is not determined by its packaging or name.

At any rate, no one should depend on such supplements as the primary method for achieving healthy skin.
